Azealia Banks Impresses At Brisbane “Listen Out”

Azealia Listen Out

Azealia Banks hasn’t had a pleasant week in Australia with some moron throwing a full beer can at her onstage in Melbourne 90 seconds into her first song.

Honestly, who DOES that? What makes it worse is the social media hatred being targeted towards her because of it. If someone threw a can at me while I was trying to do my job and be possibly knocked out – I’d be hitting the bricks too. I hope that cheeky bastard had his ass thrown out the gig – then had a full can pelted at him.

Thankfully Miss Banks had none of that bull to contend with in my city of Brisbane – the audience showed nothing but love for one of the most creative, bad (bad as in good) rappers of today.

Audience

“Listen Out” music festival is a re-branded event taken from the previous “Park Life.” The audience was full of young people who enjoy listening to dance and house music, and were predominantly very chilled.

I think Azealia Banks should start securing set places in hip hop festivals rather than this same scene. The beats that are laid over the top of her raps are dance or house sounding, but that doesn’t take away from the fact she is indeed a talented rapper.

Outfit And Dancers

Azealia took the stage in a bodycon dress with the word ‘MORE’ written in colourful letters down the front of the dress to cleverly conceal the goodies.

Mama had diamond chains on and in true mermaid fashion rocked a magnificent golden blonde weave with dark brown tips. She had two dancers onstage one female and one fabulous male who vogued like his life depended on it. They truly complimented her persona and energy onstage.

The Set

The Weave Queen took the stage at 6.25pm sharp (side eye Rihanna in Adelaide with her recent 90 minute tardiness) for a half an hour set. To be fair, Azealia Banks does have a substantive fan base in Australia but any longer of a set and she probably would have lost half the crowd with unknown tracks.

The set length was just right, a perfect balance of tracks from her mixtape “Fantasea,” from her 2012 EP “1991” and her latest song “ATM Jam” featuring Pharrell.

Tracks she performed included;

  • “ATM Jam”
  • “Fierce”
  • “1991”
  • “Luxury”
  • “Jumanji”
  • “Harlem Shake”
  • “Esta Noche”
  • “Liquorice”
  • “212”

 The Verdict

The energy was consistently high throughout the set, the audience were really enjoying her performance and song selection. She spat her verses with ease and worked the stage very well, I was extremely impressed with Azealia. The only complaint I have from a photographer’s perspective is the lack of bright stage lighting in order to snap great shots!

Azealia Banks may have a bad girl reputation but in Brisbane tonight she truly showed her fans the performance we expected from her and then some.

Bravo Banks – come back to Brisbane soon sis!
