Caught Out There – Kelis: THROWBACK THURSDAYS

Throwback Thursday track of the week is Kelis’ revenge ode “Caught Out There.”

This female anthem was a huge hit in 1999 and was a song I remember belting out with such disdain. “Caught Out There” was the leading single from Kaleidoscope and was the first time I had ever heard of Kelis. I loved her coloured curly hair in the video, her brutal honesty, her low voice and overall quirky sense of style and unique look.

Track Significance

This song has personal meaning to me and is a tribute song to all those women who have been deceived  by their men and/or cheated on. I have imagined myself singing this song to this certain person of insignificance who was once in my life *hair flips*.

“Caught Out There” is the ultimate ‘I’m calling you on your bullsh*t and I’m taking action you asshole’  female empowerment song.

Kelis is one of my very favourite artists and I have followed her throughout her career. I have all of her albums. I saw her in concert last year at The Good Vibrations festival on the Gold Coast and I really enjoyed her performance. At the time I wasn’t feeling the new found dance sound that was the Flesh Tone album, however after a few listens while I was running it really grew on me. However, I do prefer her in her R&B/hip hop. I love the tone of Kelis’ voice.

Who is Kelis?

Kelis (pronounced Kuh-Lease) was born and raised in the Harlem neighborhood of New York. Her first name is a portmanteau of her father’s name, Kenneth, and her mother’s name, Eveliss. Her father Kenneth was an African American jazz musician and Pentecostal minister, and was formerly a professor at Wesleyan University.

Her mother Eveliss is a half Puerto Rican and half Chinese fashion designer who inspired Kelis to pursue her singing career. She has three sisters, Kelis being the third born of the four girls.

As a child, Kelis sang in church choirs and played violin, piano, and saxophone while attending Manhattan Country School, a private school. At the age of 13, Kelis shaved off all of her hair. In an interview with Charlotte Roche, Kelis says she was kicked out of her parents house at the age of sixteen for having bad behavior stating that she would sometimes clash with her mother. A friend introduced Kelis to The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo); they formed a strong bond and with their support, landed herself a record deal.

Kelis was married to rapper Nas in 2005 and in April 2009 she filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences”. She was seven months pregnant at the time. On July 22, 2009, Kelis gave birth to a baby boy named Knight. You can see baby Knight in her music video “Accapella.”

Music Video

The “Caught Out There” music video directed by Hype Williams (top choice Kelis!) is intense and visually is everything you would expect a song about enacting revenge on a deceitful and philandering partner to be like.

The video starts with her cheating man on life support in the hospital as they try to revive him – damages inflicted by the scorned Kelis. The clip continues with Kelis in scenes with her manwhore of a man passed out or severely injured as she expresses her anger and how she gave him everything only for him to throw it away for some trashy b*tch.

At the end she starts a picket with a crowd of crossed women who have had it with the lies and cheating of their men. I think the illest part of this song other than the angry chorus – is the gun cock as she spits, “I’ve got something for y’all now since you’re caught out there” suggesting she shoots her cheating man in an act of revenge.

I really like her hair in this clip and if I wasn’t so conservative I would definitely rock her multi-coloured curls.

Lyrics

Caught Out There

Kelis

Yo, yo
Yo, this song, yo
This song is for all the women out there
That been lied to by their men
And I know you all been lied to
Over and over again
This is for y’all
Yo, maybe you didn’t break the way you shoulda broke, yo
But I break, knowwhatumsaying, so
This is how it goes, yo
Psss…
Damn
Yo, yo

Last year, Valentine’s day
You would spoil me and say
“Babe, I love you, love you (Yo, he’s lying) and I swear”
Held you when you were sick, even … (sucked yo d*ck)
The whole time I think to myself, this isn’t fair

What is this I see (No)
You don’t come home to me (Oh, no)
When you don’t come home to me (Man)
Can’t deal, can’t bear

You keep tellin’ me lies
But to your surprise
Look, I found her red coat
And you’re (B*tch) caught out there

[1] – I hate you so much right now
I hate you so much right now
Ahhhhh…
I hate you so much right now
I hate you so much right now
I hate you so much right now
Ahhhhh…
I hate you so much right now

So sick of your games, I’ll set your truck to flames
And watch it blow up, blow up, (ha-ha-ha) tell me
How you gonna see it now
So far from sincere (I love you)
Fabrications in my ear
Drive me so far up the wall
I come slidin’ down

What is this I see (I don’t believe this)
You don’t come home to me
When you don’t come home to me
I can’t deal, can’t bear (I won’t)

You keep tellin’ me lies
But to your surprise
Look, I hope you’re happy
Since you’re caught out there

(Yeah, you’ve been caught)
Yo’, come on
Come on

[Repeat 1]

(She’s so)
Raunchy, so vulgar, not me, why the hell her
Look, she dresses (Look at her)
A mess, what do you see (I don’t know)
It’s not all about cash (Hell, no)
Not how much you flash
How I dress is a reflection of me

What is this I see
You don’t come home to me (Uh-uh)
When you don’t come home to me
Can’t deal, can’t bear (Told you I won’t)

You keep tellin’ me lies
But to your surprise
Look, I got somethin’ for y’all
Since you’re caught out there

[Repeat 1 till end]
