Fantasy – Mariah Carey ft ODB: THROWBACK THURSDAYS

Mariah Fantasy

This week’s Throwback Thursday track is Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy” Bad Boy remix featuring ODB.

The 1995 hit track Fantasy(Bad Boy remix featuring ODB) is one of my all time favourite songs. Remember the scene in the movie “Rush Hour” where the kidnapped girl belts out this track karaoke style in the car? Yeah well, that’s me when I hear “Fantasy” Bad Boy remix…times a thousand.

The song samples the hook of “Genius of Love” by the Tom Tom ClubMariah stated that she was listening to the radio and heard the song and hadn’t heard it in a long time. It reminded her of growing up and listening to the radio and that feeling the song gave her seemed to go with the melody and basic idea she had for “Fantasy.” The rest was history!

Track Significance

I have grown up being told I look like Mariah Carey for as long as I’ve had curly hair, a mixed race look and a caramel complexion. At my cousin’s place in Sydney where I used to go on school holidays there was a corner store owned by a Lebanese family who would actually refer to me as Mariah every time I’d go down there to buy something.

“Fantasy” Bad Boy remix is one of those epic Mariah tracks which you cannot physically restrain yourself from belting out karaoke style. I predict out of all the Mariah catalogue – this song would be one of the most requested in karaoke bars and the most jammed out to in cars complimented by raised hand gestures as you hit those high notes.

The ODB verses at the beginning and throughout are everything! This song really marked Carey’s transition into the R&B and hiphop genre/market with Sean Combs assisting in the production of the “Fantasy” remix (you can hear him talk on the remix).

I had the “#1’s” cd where “Fantasy” remix featured and originally on the 1995 album “Daydream.” I had this song on heavy rotate pretty much all through my teenage years.

Yes I wished I was 1990s Mariah. She had the hottest rappers/executive producers of the day lining up to do collaborations and work with her – Jermaine Dupri, Sean Combs, ODB, Cam’ron to name a few. She had the sickest body (and is getting it back thanks to Jenni Craig post dem babies), flowing hair, bling accessories and the voice of an angel what MORE could you WANT?!

Who is Mariah Carey?

Mariah Carey was born in Huntington, New York, on March 27, 1970. Her father, Alfred Roy, was of African American and Venezuelan descent, while her mother, Patricia (née Hickey), was an Irish American. Patricia dabbled in opera singing  and vocal coaching (well that explains Mariah’s voice now doesn’t it?) and was disowned by her own family for marrying a black man.

Carey’s name was derived from the song “They Call the Wind Mariah”, originally from the 1951 Broadway musical Paint Your Wagon. When Carey was three years old, her parents divorced due to the increasingly strenuous nature of their marriage. Mariah was one of three children, her siblings named Allison and Morgan.

By the age of four, Carey recalled that she had begun to sneak the radio under her covers at night, and just sing from her heart, and try and find peace within the music. Her mother trained her how to reach the whistle register – explaining those high pitched tones she reaches.

Mariah married her music producer head of Columbia Records Tommy Mottola in 1993 and divorced in 1997 due to his controlling nature and creative differences. The album “Butterfly” showcased Mariah’s sexier side armed with singledom with the release of the lead single “Honey.” Remember that swimming pool scene in the video?? Ooo!

Carey and actor/comedian Nick Cannon met while they shot her music video for her second single, “Bye Bye”, on an island off the coast of Antigua. On April 30, 2008, Carey married Cannon at her private estate on Windermere Island in The Bahamas.

Mariah has also acted, the 2001 film “Glitter” being slammed by critics but her 2009 role in “Precious” was award winning and nominated nine times.

In 2011, she gave birth to twins Monroe and Moroccan Cannon after a very difficult pregnancy. She has since lost the weight by crediting Jenni Craig.

Chart performance

“Fantasy” achieved strong commercial success around the world. The song became Carey’s ninth number one single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. It spent eight weeks at the top of the chart, from September 24 to November 18, 1995 and spent 23 weeks in the top 40.

It was the second best-selling single of 1995 in the US, with sales of over 1,500,000 and it ranked at number fifteen on the Hot 100 decade-end chart for the 1990s.

Home here in Australia, the song topped the chart and was certified platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).

Mariah Carey has been credited with the first artist who bought R&B/hiphop into the mainstream music charts with the recording and chart success of “Fantasy.”

Music Video

The single’s music video was the first that Carey directed entirely on her own.

The video features Mariah in an amusement park on a rollercoaster, rollerblading around, having a fun time.  Mariah is seen dancing on top of what looks like a Hummer and with others. The dancing of the featured dancers is sick  B-Boy style.

She looks young and hot in a cropped black top jeans and jacket – ODB on the other hand, looks crazy as hell, but hey, it’s ODB damn it!
