We Found Love – Rihanna: MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW

Let me premise this post by saying I didn’t like this song when I first heard it. All I heard was a club banger, YES I was one of the people saying Rihanna girl, you need to take a break, leave us thirsty for you. All that changed at 4:36 minutes after watching this…

I was moved and shocked at how powerful this video was considering how shallow the song sounds on the surface. Then again Rihanna kept tweeting how deep, proud of this video, and how unprecedented it was for weeks which kept me intrigued.

“We Found Love” visually, is what you would hope all music videos should be. It brings so much more dimension and meaning to the song than an airplay only track could ever bring.

“We Found Love” opens with the following spoken audio:

“It’s like you’re screaming and no one can hear, you almost feel ashamed, that someone could be that important, that without them you feel like nothing. No one will ever understand how much it hurts. You feel hopeless, but nothing can save you, and when it’s over and it’s gone, you almost wish that you can almost have that bad stuff back so you can have the good.”

The music video evokes the message of finding and embracing love to the point that it becomes an addiction, like a drug. It is unhealthy and dangerous and you feel hopeless without it and the other person, despite knowing how bad they are for you. Rihanna and her love interest are head over heels in love with one another but it soon turns sour when drugs and abuse seem to taint that blissful love once shared and she walks away from the relationship despite her regret.

The first thing I noticed in this video was the male lead role and how strikingly similar he looks to Chris Brown.

Dudley O’Shaughnessy is the lead role in the Melina-directed mini-movie, which was shot in various locations throughout Northern Ireland. -Rap-Up

Not only does he look like Chris Brown, the toxic behaviour in the video is familiar, the abuse, is also visually depicted with them arguing in the car and in the bedroom. I do not believe this was a coincidence. Symbolically, the relationship starts to disintegrate with the crumbling of the tall building, the torched building burns, police sirens are seen flashing, the drunkenness, overdosing and passing out are depicted.

Rihanna and her man are shown loving and living it up everywhere from a fish and chip shop, to a skate park, casino, music festival and supermarket to a field.

As usual her outfits throughout are on point.

My opinion on this video was actually retweeted by Rihanna herself *faints* while canvassing thoughts on “We Found Love” video from Rihanna Navy. I was talking to a Rihanna stan shout out to Ce_Fenty_Bey after watching this video:

Ce: ‘Absolutely in love with it! she shows us a little bit about how she LOVES in this video. it took her/the record to next level.’

Me: ‘I like stars who strip themselves bare emotionally & express their vulnerability. I think Rihanna does this VERY well.’

It appears Rihanna read it, liked it and retweeted it to her 8 million followers. WINNING!

There is something very scary about exposing your inner most vulnerabilities  to one person, let alone the world. Rihanna is at the young age of 23, but sometimes when you hear and watch songs like “Rehab,” “Take A Bow,” “Russian Roulette,” and “Man Down,” all hit singles which detail a pain and darkness. Rihanna must have experienced at some point these emotions (whether it was her directly or someone very close to her) as she sings it with such integrity and pain in her voice.

I have got to give full props to Rihanna for this video because it has changed my opinion of the track completely, and from reading other bloggers I am not alone in thinking this. Any time Rihanna gets deep and real, she wins my respect even more and I think that “We Found Love” is just the start of more epic tracks to come from the upcoming album “Talk That Talk.”
