November 2012 urban album releases

November albums

November 2012 will see some hot urban albums hit the shelves from talented women such as Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys to R&B crooner Ne-Yo.

Out of the four I am probably most anticipating Rihanna’s new release ‘Unapologetic’ – I am always a sucker for Rihanna’s annual LP serving and I was a huge fan of 2011’s ‘Talk That Talk.’

Ne-Yo – ‘R.E.D’

Ne-Yo is to release his fifth studio album titled ‘R.E.D’ which stands for Realizing Every Dream on November 6 2012.

Singles which have been released to date from the thirteen track album include ‘Lazy Love,’ of which I STILL have on repeat, ‘Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)’ co-written by our own Sia and ‘She Is’ featuring Tim McGraw.  Love the country collabo!

I am really looking forward to hearing Ne-Yo’s latest effort considering how much of a fan I have been of his past work and current singles.

It’s a battle between the women from the West Indies. Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are going head to head on November 19th to secure a spot on the album charts.

Rihanna – ‘Unapologetic’

Rihanna is releasing her seventh album like clockwork almost a year to the date from her last offering ‘Talk That Talk’ (you can read my track-by-track review here). Her latest LP is titled ‘Unapologetic’ and features the #1 hit single on the Billboard charts ‘Diamonds.’

This will be an attractive release for those who are still Rih-curious from her recent Oprah interview particularly concerning her recent rumoured reunion with former flame Chris Brown.

Does the album title and handwritten words on the cover suggest she is done apologising to her critics for her life choices? Will ‘Unapologetic’ feature tracks that are telling of her relationship and life experiences so beautifully articulated in ‘We Found Love’? We’ll have to find out…

[FUN FACT] The album is also being sold in a ‘Diamonds Executive Platinum Box’ on December 11 costing a whopping USD $250.

This limited edition art piece for a true collector includes a T-shirt, seven art-print lithographs, and a vinyl record containing remixes of latest single ‘Diamonds.’ Also included are an ‘Unapologetic’-branded 2GB flash memory drive, various stickers, and a “handwritten personal note,” plus a 40-page booklet of lyrics and notes. There’s also a white-and-silver ViewMaster stocked with previously unreleased 3D Rihanna images.

Rihanna has released video footage of the making of ‘Unapologetic’ for her Navy. Watch the Bajan beauty do her thang below:

Nicki Minaj – ‘Pink Friday Roman Reloaded: The Re-Up’

The booty-full Trinidadian native Nicki Minaj is set to drop her third studio album as an eight track ad-on to a re-release of April 2012’s ‘Pink Friday Roman Reloaded.’

Nicki Minaj is still on her world tour and yet is pumping out more tracks for her Barbz AND releasing accompanying videos. Does this girl sleep? Ever? *sideyes Rihanna* Yeah that shade is aimed at you too, boo.

‘The Re-Up’ will contain a total of three discs, the first including eight additional songs, the second being the standard edition of the original album, and the third being a DVD, containing the album’s music videos and ninety minutes of behind-the-scenes footage.

I’m Just Saying’s readers know my thoughts on ‘Pink Friday Roman Reloaded’ – it slayed and seeing Minaj perform it in concert slayed even more [read my review of the Pink Friday Tour here].

I’ll admit I was mad at her for a minute venturing away from her mixtape roots – but sis redeemed herself as my favourite female rapper and pop diva with that release. The gyal crossed rap, pop and dance lines and did it like a freaking champion with the single releases from the same LP topping the charts.

Minaj claims the ‘The Re-Up’ features predominantly rap tracks.

Two singles have already been officially released from ‘Pink Friday Roman Reloaded: The Re-Up’ that is ‘The Boys’ featuring Cassie [watch the video for The Boys’] and ‘Freedom.’

Alicia Keys – ‘Girl On Fire’

The queen of the piano, Miss Alicia Keys is set to drop ‘Girl On Fire’ her fifth studio album on November 27th 2012. The thirteen track LP succeeds her 2009 release ‘The Element of Freedom’ the three years in between she experienced marriage and the birth of her first child with Swizz Beatz.

I expect that we are going to hear music that reflects her life as a mother and wife. To be honest I am not particularly looking forward to ‘Girl On Fire’ as it has been dubbed by critics as ‘the new Alicia’ and if the single of the same name is anything to go by – I expect a lacklustre offering such as the tracks heard on ‘Element of Freedom.’

I’ve drifted away from liking Keys as much as I used to (I was seriously her biggest stan) as I found that the girl power lyrics she preached in her songs wasn’t being practiced in her personal life. If you want to find out more about this check out my rant here.

She has also pissed me off recently with her new Reebok shoe endorsement where she features a shoe that is covered in dot art – a design style native to the Aboriginal people of Australia’s Central Desert. The shoe is titled ‘Tribal’ and it doesn’t appear to me when I tweeted their design team and Alicia herself that intellectual property rights were legally obtained. If rights weren’t legally sought, I perceive this as theft – that design belongs to those people of that area and the illegal recreation of Indigenous people’s culture for profit sickens me. Millions of dollars are generated each year in tourism goods using Indigenous culture with profits going back to non-Indigenous people. It deeply saddens and angers me to think that one of my favourite artists is potentially engaging in such an exploitative act.

Alicia performed ‘Girl On Fire’ live at the 2012 MTV VMAs and it fell royally flat – her voice cracking and struggling to hit the higher notes.

To date two singles have been released from ‘Girl On Fire’ a single of the same name which features a remix collaborating with Nicki Minaj, and ‘New Day.’

[SHADE ALERT] What’s with the ‘Mum’ hair? Bring back the cornrow braids or curls – girl, that hair is way too harsh on your face. I know you’re a new mother but damn, we KNOW you got a nanny and you sure ain’t short of change to get your hair done – you need to check yourself. Oh we all want to know – what the hell happened to the ‘Put In A Love Song’ music video featuring Beyonce? I know y’all shot it in South America – we all saw the damn photos! Bey outshined you huh? Yeah….

It is my hope that she re-uses the successful formula founded on ‘Songs in A Minor’ and ‘The Diary of Alicia Keys’ for ‘Girl On Fire’ because honestly that’s when you couldn’t tell Alicia nothing! That chick was unstoppable on the charts at that point in her career sis was killin…it. Her latest releases have been less than impressive.
